Athletic Updates

Below you will find the most up to date information from the VISD Athletics Department.

Reminder:

* All VISD Athletic facilities will follow COVID-19 risk mitigation guidelines as recommended by the UIL and State Authorities. We ask that as a spectator, you help slow the spread of COVID-19 by:
1. Wearing a face covering at all times unless consuming food or drink; and
2. Maintaining at least six feet of distancing at all times from other groups and individuals outside your household.

Because schools not following these guidelines are subject to sanctions, including suspension of contests or discontinuation of public access to games by the UIL, if these guidelines are not followed at VISD facilities, spectator may be removed from the event.

The Varsity Victoria West vs. Flour Bluff football game scheduled for Friday, October 2nd, has been moved to Friday, December 4th.

Several players on the West Warrior team have tested positive for COVID-19 and many have been quarantined due to close contact with a COVID-positive person. The number of team members in quarantine has surpassed the 20% absentee rate the district implemented for determining whether to consider canceling events. In regards to the football game, this percentage does not allow the coaching staff to effectively and safely field a team for game time.

At this time, the freshman and junior varsity games scheduled for the week of September 28th will be played.

Our student athletes and coaching staff have worked hard preparing for this season. While the postponement is extremely disappointing for everyone, the virus is still active in our community and we must take appropriate steps to ensure their health and safety. We are excited to have to opportunity to play this District game at a later date.

Thank you for your continued support during these times of uncertainty as we navigate these obstacles together.

This week's Victoria West High School varsity football game on Friday, September 25, against Boerne Champion has been canceled.

The freshman and junior varsity games this week will be played as scheduled.

Fans who have purchased tickets for Friday’s West varsity football game can contact the VISD Athletics office at (361) 578-0289 for a refund.

Planning for Upcoming Athletic Seasons

Message from Athletic Director, Spencer Gantt:
As we have navigated the COVID-19 pandemic over the past few months, one common question is whether athletic events will take place. Victoria ISD is planning to hold these events, although ticketing and fan capacities will look very different than in the past.

We are working on safety plans specific to each sport and facility. Communications with more details about game attendance will come as the start of these seasons approach. Our priority is to maintain a safe environment for our student athletes, coaching staff, and fans. Capacity limits at VISD facilities will be based on guidance from state officials and the University Interscholastic League (UIL). This includes maintaining physical distancing among fans and safety protocols.

Given those capacity limits, VISD will not be issuing passes (district, employee, Gold Card, etc.) this year. Game attendance will be prioritized for the families of our students directly involved in the activity. To allow for everyone interested in supporting our teams to watch games in real time, we are working on plans to live stream home games for fall sports.

More sport-specific communication with detailed capacity, ticket purchase process, etc. will be shared in the coming weeks. Questions may be directed to the VISD Athletic Department at 361-578-0289.

Thank you for your continued support of the VISD Athletic Department and loyalty to our student athletes.

VISD Annual Athletics Physicals Event Cancelled

Message from Athletic Trainer, Ron Davis:

Good Afternoon everyone,

We had hoped to be able to give good news and a little help to our student athletes as we prepare for the upcoming seasons. After communicating with our local hospitals and with all the Athletic Trainers here in VISD, we have had to make a decision in regards to hosting a mass Physical for all of our students that would be in need of getting a new physical for the upcoming school year. With how spread thin our medical community is because of COVID-19 we are cancelling our proposed date of August 1 and will not be rescheduling that date.

We are aware that this might put some of our students in a bind but we just cannot get the resources together in order to host such an event. Please tell you students to make contact with their primary care physician and get one completed. As a reminder the UIL has given us some exceptions for this coming school year.

If a student had a physical done for the 2019-2020 school year then their physical is still valid unless they have underlying medical issues that have or are being treated by a medical doctor ( sickle cell, cardiovascular issues or any chronic issues that has been discussed by the Athletic Trainers) or they have had a surgery of some sort since their previous physical that is on file with the Athletic Training Staff.

All students must have a physical on file with the Athletic Trainers prior to their participation on August 3rd or after. They must also complete any and all paperwork on rankonesport.com.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact on of your Athletic Trainers.

Victoria ISD will resume summer strength and conditioning camps and sport-specific workouts, for at least two weeks.

Sports Camps Temporarily Suspended

Victoria ISD will temporarily suspend all summer strength and conditioning camps and sport-specific workouts, for at least two weeks. In our effort to be transparent with our families and community, a student-athlete and coach in separate camps tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. Another student-athlete was exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19. None of the positive cases were contracted on campus or at the voluntary practices.

This precautionary measure is in the best interest of the safety, health, and well-being of our students and staff. We commend our coaches and athletes for always adhering to and implementing the safety guidelines the University Interscholastic League (UIL) has set forth. We greatly appreciate their efforts in the past few weeks, as they have been diligent in keeping our students safe.

Coaches are communicating with the student-athletes and their parents. We anticipate resuming strength and conditioning and sport-specific camps on July 13, if it is deemed safe to do so.

UIL Modifies Regulations for Physicals/Medical History Paperwork for 20-21 School Year

As per the UIL, there are some changes for this coming year regarding regulations pertaining to athletic/extracurricular physicals. For the 2020-2021 school year, the UIL has stated that anyone who had a physical from the previous year will not require a new physical for the 2020-2021 school year, unless the student has had one of the following circumstances occur:
  1. The student has never had a previous physical. (ex. New student to athletics or band, incoming 7th grader or 9th grader, etc.);
  2. The student has had any surgery since their previous physical;
  3. The student has answered yes to one of the first six questions listed on the medical history form.
The UIL has updated the Medical History Form for the 2020-2021 school year. VISD hase been in contact with Rankone Sports and will have it uploaded on the form page as a required form that parents will need to fill out and complete the check boxes.

As we have done in years past, all forms will be done online at www.rankonesport.com . Please find Texas, then Victoria ISD and begin the online forms. Each student will be required to complete eight forms in total that will also include the NEW Medical History Form. All students will need to complete this form. No other versions of the Medical History Form will be accepted.

Rankone will have it setup that if the parent answers yes to one of the questions requiring a new physical the Athletic Trainers will be notified. This means that your student will need a new physical and will not be allowed to participate until they have received a new physical for the 2020-2021 school year.

All forms must be completed by July 31st, 2020.
If your student has not completed the required forms then they will not be allowed to participate until all forms have been completed and checked off by one of the Athletic Trainers. In an effort to help those students that have been identified as one that will need a new physical prior to the start of fall activities, we will try to host a physical date on August 1st from 9-12 at Victoria West High School. For this year only, we will waive the fees for those students that participate in our school based physical.

We will send out information confirming a date for the athletic physical clinic as we get closer to that time.If for any reason you have any questions please feel free to contact any of the Athletic Trainers. Thanks again for all of your complete support and patience in these trying times. Stay Safe.

Athletic Physicals Rescheduled, August 2020
As we reach into uncertain times we are tasked with making difficult decisions. With that being said, we are having to make changes to VISD's annual Athletic Physicals that were scheduled for April 23rd at West High School and April 29th at East High School. We have cancelled those dates and set a date of August 1st for our physicals.

They will be hosted at West HS from 9am-3pm. The cost will remain the same at $15 dollars per student. We have contacted our doctors and hospitals for their assistance with this and they are on board as much as they can be and feel optimistic about getting us plenty of resources for that day.

Previous emails and notifications set a date of April 1st as a cutoff for any new physical to be accepted for the 2020-2021 school year. We will still honor that date as we know many parents have set up appointments with their primary doctor. This was a difficult decision for us to make and had to set this date because it is the absolute last day possible prior to any athletics practices and tryouts starting on August 3rd.

We want to wish everyone a safe and happy spring, and we pray that everyone stays healthy in these uncertain times.
